It began with a creative concept.

A sketch illustrating a string curtain installed within the giant 21m x 16m arches of EXPO2020’s Al Wasl Plaza, for the Closing Ceremony.

Our proposal had to seamlessly integrate with the complicated architecture of the world’s largest 360° projection dome, which curved in multiple axes.

The design was challenging, any discrepancy in the alignment would cause a noticeable disparity in the string spacing. Finding the balance of enough adjustment, without too much, was crucial.

Pitchblack brought it to life.

With just 31 days to design, draw, engineer, source, fabricate and install, we got straight to work.

In order to meet the tight timelines, precision planning was critical. Installation took place over 4 nights, however as the EXPO site was open to the public during the day no part of the installation could be left unfinished, or non-symmetrical. This directed the approach to design and manufacture.

The steel structure was designed to be modular, and the team pre-strung sections in our DIP warehouse, wrapping each with attention to ensure no tangles in the 60,000m of 4mm paracord. With a breaking strength of 380kg it provided dual functionality - structural integrity, and aesthetics.
